Samantha Lesley

Hello, my name is Samantha, I'm an artist and I specialize in abstract painting. I'm 23 years old, born in North London.
I graduated from Middlesex University after studying BA Fine Art in 2011.
Using a mixed palette, my work shows the physical gesture in the way I scrape the paint in different directions, to create a textured piece which the audience can interpret in their own way.
I am interested in the process of painting and how different colours are mixed together to create a ‘torn’ effect. I started to look at cityscapes from a bird’s eye point of view. Throughout researching different artists I have been looking at Peit Mondrian as he has a big influence on me from past works I have produced.
Gerhard Richter was another artist who has given me a lot of inspiration for using the scraping technique as this became a very important in my work.

Jason Martin’s works, which centre on the modernist categories of the gestural and monochrome, appear as a consistent exploration of a subtle characteristic style constantly refined over the years. For each work, he constructs a special comb of the same size as the length of the ground, and uses it to score fine lines in the freshly applied paint, thus creating different kinds of surfaces according to the material of the ground (usually already in relief) and the pastosity of the oil paint or acrylic gel. Jason Martin’s works are structurally extremely varied, ranging from a thin glaze that allows the reflecting metal ground to shine through, to expressive, deep reliefs with fleshy borders  of oil-paint spilling out over the edges of the picture.

Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colours, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential.” - Wassily Kandinsky.
